It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Wayne Funk, age 71, on March 5, 2024.
He is survived by his sister Doreen (Larry) Slashinsky, niece Jennifer (Kurt) Peterson, nephew Ryan (Krista) Slashinsky, and 4 great nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his mother Mary, father Peter and stepfather Abe Kehler.
Wayne grew up on a farm in Tourond, Manitoba. After graduating from high school, he began working for the Stylerite Company in Winnipeg. He continued working for Stylerite as a store manager in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. He moved back to Winnipeg sometime in the 90s and bought a dollar store in Transcona and managed it for several years. He was very happy working at his own store but in the end, he needed to sell it because of too much competition. He moved on to work in a Canadian Tire store as a promotions manager for a number of years. He had his first heart surgery during that time which is when he decided to retire.
Wayne enjoyed a round of golf with his friends in his free time. He always said that he wasn’t much good at it but he enjoyed being outdoors and he loved the camaraderie of his golfing buddies. He was so sorry to give up the game after his third heart surgery. He was also an avid biker and could spend a whole day biking from one end of the city to the other. In recent years though, he was not able to bike as much due to some major health issues. But biking was so much a part of him that he purchased an electric bike recently and was looking forward to trying it out this summer. Wayne also enjoyed meeting for coffee with his friends every Saturday and Sunday morning “to shoot the breeze” as he always said. He will be missed greatly by friends and family.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, March 15, 2024, at Crossings Funeral Care. 12E-40 North Gate Drive, Steinbach, Manitoba. A private family interment will take place at a later date in Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens, Winnipeg, Manitoba. For those unable to attend in person, the family invites you to join them through livestream.
