Barry Warkentin

October 16, 1973 — March 11, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of Barry Warkentin in Lloydminster, AB, on March 11, 2025. Barry was a beloved father, son, brother, uncle and friend.

He is survived by his son, Zephan Warkentin; his father, Marlin Warkentin; and his sisters Ruby (Lorren Penner) and their children, Nikia, Chloe, Kaden, and Kenzie; Barbara (Jesse Jantz) and their children, Madilyn, Ryker, and Raegan; Colleen (Jay Wohlgemuth) and their children, Damian and Zane; as well as his brother, Jon (Dana) Warkentin and their children, Eve, Olive, and Jacob.

Barry was predeceased by his loving mother, Katherine Warkentin, in 2022, as well as his grandparents.

Born in Steinbach, MB, on October 16, 1973, Barry was the firstborn of Marlin and Kathy. He brought immense joy to their lives and grew up on the family farm in Greenland, MB. Many cherished memories were made there—filled with mischievous adventures and hard work alongside his parents and siblings. By first grade Barry was already driving the combine, and looking back, we’re not entirely sure how he survived! He spent countless hours planting fields in the spring and helping with the harvest in the fall.

Barry and Helen Banman were united in marriage on March 18, 2005. Their union not only brought forth Barry’s greatest pride and joy—his son Zephan—but also made Alex his daughter, with whom he shared many special memories. Barry adored his son and treasured the time they had together.

“My dad and I shared many special times together. It was always an adventure, no matter where we went or what we were doing. He always knew how to make me laugh. I will forever cherish the time we had, although it will never feel long enough,” Zephan recalls.

Barry became a long-distance truck driver, a career he held for 20 years. In 2018, he moved to Lloydminster, where he worked alongside his brother-in-law, Lorren, in drywalling. He treasured the time his son, Zephan, lived with him and cherished every moment they spent together.

Barry had a deep love for fishing with his son, joking around, and playing pranks—especially teasing his mom. He had a passion for anything with a motor and loved the thrill of speed. We are so thankful for this last Christmas at the cabin in Sioux Narrows because we made so many special memories together. We almost didn’t have Christmas dinner—steak—because we ran out of propane. But thanks to Barry’s resourcefulness and charm, he managed to find a random neighbor willing to help, and Christmas dinner was saved.

Known for his engaging conversations, charm and incredible sense of humor, Barry was a delight to be around. He will be deeply missed.

When his mother was diagnosed with cancer in 2022, Barry was deeply affected. They shared a fun and special bond, and her passing had a profound impact on him. Just a few days ago, he told his son, Zephan, once again how much he missed his mom.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the first responders who were at the scene when Barry passed and to everyone who has offered support during this difficult time.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 19, 2025 at Southland Church in Steinbach with viewing one hour prior to the service. A reception and interment to follow. For those unable to attend in person, the family invites you to join them through live stream.
