After a long and courageous battle with cancer, it is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Alma Mitchell, on September 12, 2022, surrounded by her loving family and friends.
She was predeceased by her father, Laurent Lambert and father-in-law, James Mitchell.
Alma will be deeply missed by her loving husband of 33 years, Don Mitchell, their children Daniel, Sheldon (Désirée) and their beautiful grandson Léo; mother Lucie Lambert, brothers Guy (Lynn), Dan (Melanie), Marc; mother-in-law Carol Mitchell, brother-in-law Jim (Roni). As well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Alma grew up in St-Malo, Manitoba, where she excelled in school. When she graduated high school, Alma moved to Winnipeg where she was reintroduced to Don by a mutual friend. At the age of 26, Alma married the love of her life, Don. They moved to St-Pierre-Jolys, where together they raised their two sons, Dan & Sheldon, whom she loved dearly and was extremely proud of. She was a wonderful and dedicated mother, always putting in the extra mile for her children; attending school recitals, taking them to sporting events, and planning family vacations. Spending time with her family was very important to her. One place that was close to her heart was Duck Mountains, where family and friends gathered, creating many great memories. She was a big supporter for all her brothers, family and friends. Checking in on them often and always ready to offer a helping hand.
Alma liked to challenge herself trying to improve any way she could. Even with a young family at home and working a full time job, she returned to university to complete one of her biggest goals; becoming a Certified General Accountant, where she graduated top of her class with honours. As a CGA, Alma became the Secretary Treasurer of the Red River Valley School Division, where she remained for the rest of her career. She had the pleasure of working with many great people, where most became her “work family”.
When Alma was given her terminal diagnosis, one of her wishes was to see her first grandchild born. Not only was she able to experience becoming a Memere, but also she witnessed Léo’s first and second birthdays. Alma took great pleasure in every second spent with her grandson.
No matter how difficult things got, Alma never complained. She remained strong and courageous through it all.
A celebration of life will be held at 2pm on Friday, November 4, 2022, at the St. Malo Catholic Church, 5 Saint-Malo Road, Saint-Malo, MB.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Bethesda Regional Hospital, the St-Boniface Hospital, the Cancer Care departments, the Home Care and Palliative Care staff. They would also like to thank the Red River Valley School Division, and Border Glass & Aluminum for their support during these difficult years.
If friends wish to honour Alma’s memory, donations can be made to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.
